A cube is made of white plastic, but the exterior surface is painted black. If the cube is cut into 125 smaller cubes of exactly the same size, how many of the smaller cubes have exactly two black sides?
For an additional challenge, identify all the remaining smaller cubes as to how many black sides they have, including those with no black sides. Your total, with those from the first part, should be 125.
Please e-mail Lester Dickey with your answer and your name, phone number, and the organization for which you work. Or call Barbara Buck at 624-9501. The winner will be drawn from all the correct entries and will receive a FREE pizza, either from CJs Pizza or from the EDOC Cafeteria. All answers must be in no later than the 14th of the month.
Last month's challenge brought 81 submissions, with 78 correct answers. The winner, chosen by random drawing, is Sara Lewis of MRS.
The answers to last months Challenge are: 12+12+14+14+48=100, 14+18+18+18+32=100, and 12+12+12+32+32=100. Additionally, I inadvertently left one correct answer off the list for the January 2003 Challenge. There should have been 37 answers, including 121, as pointed out by Kathy Schulz of Workers Comp. Sorry.
