Tax Alert

Innocent/Injured Spouse Claims

Maine Revenue Services (“MRS”) is receiving many 2008 individual income tax returns with a claim for innocent or injured spouse. Typically, federal Forms 8379 or 8857 are attached to these returns. MRS is able to acknowledge such claims for purposes of outstanding individual income tax debts only. If the taxpayer's debt is with any agency other than Maine Revenue Services, the taxpayer must apply for relief with that agency. Processing of returns that include federal Forms 8379 and 8857 for any debt other than an individual income tax debt will be delayed.

Unreadable Maine Individual Income Tax Returns

Maine Revenue Services has received a number of professionally prepared returns this year on which the data is so lightly printed that the Bureau's electronic scanners are not able to recognize the data on the forms causing a delay in processing. To assist us in processing all returns timely and efficiently please make sure that all prepared forms you provide to clients and/or MRS are clearly legible.

E-File Handbook

The Maine E-file Handbook can be found on the MRS web site at www.maine.gov/revenue/developers/. In addition to providing tax information and a complete description of the Maine E-file process, the handbook includes a list of Maine forms and attachments that are accepted electronically via Maine E-file.
