Selden Connor

1839-1917

Lieutenant Colonel, 7th Maine Regiment, Maine Volunteers
Colonel, 19th Maine Volunteers
Brevet Brigadier General, U.S. Volunteers
Governor of Maine 1876-1879

While the Maine State Archives is primarily a repository for State government records, we occassionally acquire private papers under special circumstances. Here is a love letter from Selden Connor to his bride-to-be Henrietta "Nettie" Bailey. Rumor has it that Netty, whose family was living in Washington, D.C. during the War, was visiting Maine soldiers in one of the hospitals where she and Selden met and fell in love. They courted for several years and finally were married shortly after this letter was written. We include it as a sample of how things used to be done in a more gracious age.

Well, that's enough of that! Anyway, he married her a few days later and they lived happily ever after!
