Maine National History Day Participation

How to participate?

Students - Students should ask social studies teachers or guidance counselors (or parents if you are home schooled) if they are familiar with Maine National History Day.

Teachers - should contact Felicia Kennedy at the Maine State Archives for further information or to be added to the MHD mailing list

How to get started?

Once the decision has been made to participate in Maine History Day, read the background information on this site and then go to the National History Day website to learn tips and techniques on how to create entries for the contest.

  • Know the Contest Rules and current NHD Theme.
  • Participating students and teachers will attend the contest on April 3, 2013 at the University of Maine in Augusta - you must be present to compete. Once schools have expressed an interest in Maine History Day, they will be added to an email distribution list and kept updated with MHD information.

How to register?

Registration desk at the 2011 contest

  • Teachers and students register online at the Maine NHD registration site. (Registration opens November 5, 2012.)
  • Registration deadline will be in March 16, 2013. There is a $5 per student entry fee. All Paper and Web Site entries will also be due March 16, 2013.
  • Historical Papers must be sent in postmarked by March 16, 2013. You will need to send 4 copies. Hard copy only. NO EMAIL.
  • Web Sites must be published by March 16, 2013. You must list the URL on your registration.

Registration Procedures

Know the registration procedures before you begin. Make sure all registrations are complete - including payment information. All required information MUST be filled in or the student's registration will be considered incomplete.

Teacher information is required before parents or students can access the system.

The initial registration process must begin with the teacher (or, if a home school, the parent who serves as teacher). Basic information required:

  • Teacher information
  • Teacher’s school
  • Students information and password setup
  • Entries

Teacher information is required before students and parents can access the system. After the teacher provides students with their access passwords, students and parents may log-in directly to their Student-Parent Status Page, from which they can link to each item in their Registration Profile. Registration Profile items:

  • Student information
  • Parent information or chaperone information
  • Entry information
  • Waivers
  • Payment of contest fees
