Commercial Vehicle Safety Inspection

Most commercial vehicles (including trucks, buses, trailers, semi trailers and tow or converter dollies), which use public highways in interstate or intrastate commerce to transport passengers or property are required to have an annual commercial vehicle safety inspection when:

  1. The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the vehicle or Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) of the vehicle exceeds 10,000 pounds; or
  2. The vehicle is designed to transport more than 15 passengers, including the driver; or
  3. The vehicle is used in the transportation of hazardous materials which require placarding.

Commercial vehicles displaying a current certificate of inspection from any state or federally approved commercial vehicle inspection program are exempt from inspection until the normal expiration of the certificate.

More information about the Motor Vehicle Inspection program can be obtained from the Department of Public Safety.
