Signatures Submitted for An Act to Create a Taxpayer Bill of Rights

AUGUSTA, MAINE – Petitions were submitted prior to today's deadline for the Citizen Initiative listed below.  They were submitted by Mary Adams of Garland at 2:50 p.m.  She indicated that approximately 54,000 signatures are listed on the petitions—roughly 3,500 more than the required 50,519 valid signatures.

According to Maine state law ( ), “the Secretary of State shall determine the validity of the petition and issue a written decision stating the reasons for the decision within 30 days after the final date for filing the petitions in the Department of the Secretary of State under the Constitution of Maine, Article IV, Part Third, Section 17 or 18.”

The final date for filing petitions for the 2006 ballot is January 30, 2006. The Secretary of State must therefore issue a written certification decision by March 1, 2006.  The Secretary of State expects to issue the decision as soon as possible.  Maine's Elections Division is working on preparations for the November, 2005 statewide referendum election.
