2006 Best of the Web Awards

AUGUSTA, Maine – October 5, 2006 – The official Web site of the state of Maine ( has again been named one of the best state government sites in the nation. was ranked second in the 2006 Center for Digital Government Best of the Web national competition for government Web site excellence. Since the Best of the Web competition started in 1996, Maine has received the most top-three awards (6) making the most consistently honored Web portal in the country.

As part of the 2006 Best of the Web competition, also earned a Digital Government Achievement Award in recognition of the state’s online suite of services for the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). This suite includes vehicle registration renewals, license renewals, driving record searches, and vanity license plate orders. With this suite of services, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles has found a way to make services more accessible for the citizens of the state of Maine while also saving them time and money in the process.  

The 2006 Best of the Web competition was conducted by the Center for Digital Government, an international research and advisory institute on the use of information technology in government. More than 200 Government Web sites and services were evaluated based on innovation, functionality, efficiency and economy.  

“We are honored that the Center for Digital Government has once-again recognized Maine as a leader in electronic government services,” said Governor John E. Baldacci. “Our goal is to maintain customer satisfaction, while establishing convenient and cost-effective services. This recognition, along with the positive feedback from our constituents, reinforces our goals.”

In an effort to ensure that is continually delivering cutting-edge content and features, received a number of enhancements in 2006. Two noteworthy additions include improved public access through RSS feeds and a mobile version of RSS feeds provide an easy way for citizens to subscribe to news and updates from and receive the latest headlines on their computers at no cost. The streamlined mobile version ( provides users with essential information including news, weather, citizen alerts, town contact information, and voter information via web-enabled mobile phones and personal digital assistants.

“Significant steps are constantly being taken to ensure that Maine’s Web site is cutting edge, accessible, usable, and develops efficiencies for our agencies and our constituents,” said Dick Thompson, Chief Information Officer. “We are very proud of the recognition of those efforts.” offers access to more than 500 agency Web sites and provides over 300 online services for citizens, businesses, and visitors to interact with both state and local government. Services available at include corporate name searches and filings, vehicle registration and driver’s license renewals, public criminal history record searches, and hunting and fishing license purchases.
