Secretary Dunlap Announces Expansion of Online Services
To Include Ordering of Vanity Plates for Automobiles

AUGUSTA, MAINE – Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap announced on Tuesday that a new online Vanity Plate Search and Order Service is now available. Since 1999, citizens have been able to search for the availability of a Vanity Plate. Until now, however, plates could not be ordered through the Secretary of State’s website.

For the past six years, the Vanity Plate search application has generated 30,000 to 60,000 hits each month, being one of the most popular applications on State’s website www.maine.gov.

This new, expanded online ordering service eliminates the need for completing a paper form and delivering it to a Bureau of Motor Vehicles’ office. Instead, citizens are now able to search and submit an order for a vanity plate 24 hours a day in a few easy steps from the comfort of their home, office or any location with a computer and Internet access. This convenient online service can be found by visiting www.maine.gov/vanity.

“For years our vanity plate search application has been one of the most popular services on Maine.gov. It just makes sense to take it one step further and allow citizens to place an order,” Secretary of State Dunlap commented. “The Bureau of Motor Vehicles is constantly seeking to expand access to its services, and this is another example of BMV making access more convenient and available around the clock.”

Citizens may still search for a vanity plate at no cost. Those who wish to purchase a vanity plate will need to provide information from a current registration, including the vehicle plate number and the name listed on the registration. Once an order is placed online, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles reviews the plate and accepts it before processing payment. The price for placing an order varies and the service provides the correct fees before payment information is entered.

The Department of the Secretary of State offers more online services than any other state agency. For more information regarding the full range of services provided by the Secretary of State, please visit www.maine.gov/sos/.

Maine’s Vanity Plate Search and Ordering Application was created and is maintained in partnership with the Information Resources of Maine (InforME), the State of Maine’s private-sector partner and official web portal provider. InforME is a collaborative effort between the State of Maine and New England Interactive, LLC.
