Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap Announces Election to Fill House District 83 Vacancy

Election to coincide with June 12 Special Election

Augusta- Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap announced today a Special Election to be held June 12, 2007 to fill the vacancy left by the passing of State Representative Abigail Holman of Fayette on April 7. “ Governor John Baldacci issued a proclamation today addressed to members of the Democratic, Green Independent, and Republican Parties in the towns of Belgrade , Fayette, Manchester , Mount Vernon and Vienna . It orders them to meet and determine their respective candidates for Representative to the Legislature in District 83.”

Dunlap continued, “This Election will occur on June 12, the same day as the statewide Special Election to decide two bond questions. This date was chosen for two reasons; it provides sufficient time for all interested parties to determine their respective candidates, and eliminates the need for a separate stand alone election, which would place additional financial burdens on the municipalities involved.”

The proclamation reads in part, “ WHEREAS , Title 21-A of the Maine Revised Statutes Annotated, Section 362 provides that if a vacancy occurs pursuant to Section 361, the Governor shall issue a proclamation declaring the vacancy and ordering the appropriate political committees to meet; and

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOHN ELIAS BALDACCI, Governor of the State of Maine, do hereby order the appropriate members of the Democratic, Green Independent and Republican Committees of Belgrade, Fayette, Manchester, Mount Vernon and Vienna to meet to nominate their candidates for State Representative in District 83, to be voted on at the Special Election to be held on June 12, 2007.”

Certificates of Nomination for candidates must be filed with the Office of the Secretary of State on or before 5 p.m., Tuesday, May 1, 2007.
