Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap Congratulates
State Archivist Nominee on Senate Confirmation

David Cheever to be sworn In July 2

Augusta — The Maine State Senate today approved Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap’s nomination of David R. Cheever to serve as Maine’s next State Archivist. This action echoed approval from the Joint Standing Committee on State and Local Government, which voted in favor of Cheever’s appointment on Tuesday. “I am gratified by the support of the Maine Senate for the confirmation of David Cheever to be our next State Archivist,” Dunlap said. “Initial debate relating to this appointment was not unexpected, given the importance of this position. The Legislature has aggressively pursued its oversight role, and answers to their questions have been provided forthrightly by Mr. Cheever. I think this is a good example of the process working well.” Dunlap concluded, “Dave Cheever will be a great State Archivist, and the public trust will be kept well by his service.”

Cheever succeeds outgoing State Archivist James Henderson, who is retiring from the post effective June 30. Secretary Dunlap will administer the oath of office to Cheever in a brief ceremony tentatively scheduled for Monday, July 2.
