Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap Swears in New State Archivist

David R. Cheever Becomes Only the Third State Archivist in Maine History

Augusta — Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap administered the oath of office to Augusta resident David R. Cheever in a brief ceremony in the Hall of Flags at Maine’s State House this morning, allowing Cheever to begin serving as Maine’s new State Archivist effective immediately. “David brings a fresh new vision to the cultural community in Maine,” Dunlap noted, adding “that’s why I nominated him in the first place. The citizens of our State will be well-served by David in the years to come, and I know he will show everyone the sort of dedication and tenacity for the job that inspired me to select him for this post.”

“It’s been a long and interesting road which has led me here,” said Cheever in remarks to the crowd assembled to watch today’s ceremony. “I look forward to tackling the challenges ahead.”

Cheever has previously worked in planning at the State Library, and as an award winning journalist in broadcast and print media. He succeeds outgoing Archivist James Henderson, who retired at the end of June.
