Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap Announces Availability of
"We Support Our Troops" License Plate

Funds raised to benefit families of service members

Augusta — Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap is announcing the availability of a new specialty license plate known as the “We Support Our Troops” plate. “This new plate is designed to remind us of Maine and America’s men and women serving in the United States Armed Forces, both here and abroad. We need to remember, regardless of our personal feelings regarding any military actions in which our nation is engaged, the people tasked with carrying out those actions are our sons and daughters, family members and neighbors.”

The “We Support Our Troops” plate design is based on Maine’s Chickadee license plate. It features an image of a curled yellow ribbon superimposed over the shape of the State, and it carries the words “We Support Our Troops” across the bottom of the design.

Secretary Dunlap explained, “In addition to serving as a reminder of the hard work, dedication, and sacrifice of members of the United States Armed Forces, funds raised by sales of the plate will go to benefit members of the Maine National Guard and their families, or residents of the State who are members of the Armed Forces Reserves and their families for emergencies and other special needs.” To register a vehicle with the “We Support Our Troops” plate, a standard specialty plate fee of $20 is applied. $10 from each plate goes into a special fund known as the Maine National Guard Foundation Fund Special Revenue Fund. A special Advisory Board has been established to oversee the distribution of the funds collected.

LD 964, An Act to Establish a Special License Plate to Honor Maine Residents Serving Our Country, was originally sponsored by Representative Don Pilon of Saco . “This license plate is proof of how Maine works together to support our troops, whether they are at home or abroad, and whether we agree with this war or not,” Pilon said. “It allows us to honor the commitment our soldiers make to us by ensuring the needs of their families are met. I am delighted that the “We Support Our Troops” plate is now a reality.” Secretary Dunlap commented, “Representative Pilon is to be commended for his tireless efforts to make this specialty plate a reality. He shepherded the legislation creating this plate and its' associated support fund through the process, keeping it on the front burner during the 123rd Legislature after it was carried over from the 122nd.”
