Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap
Announces Motor Carrier Suspensions

"Safety on Maine Roads Trumps All Other Concerns”

Augusta- Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap has announced he is suspending operating privileges for two trucking companies who haul midway attractions- the rides often featured at fairs and festivals during the summer season. “Maine’s Motor Carrier Review Board (MCRB) has found a pattern of repeated safety violations by two carriers,” Dunlap explained, continuing, “and these are serious enough to justify 60 day suspensions for each of them. These findings resulted from reviews of the driving records for both Crystal Rock Leasing Company and Walker Brothers Circus Incorporated. The carriers had been contacted by the MCRB to address their shortcomings,” Dunlap noted, “but not only did they fail to respond to written notices, they also failed to attend hearings in front of the MCRB. I am compelled to issue the recommended 60 day suspensions today.”

Dunlap says given the situation, suspensions are the only alternative. “The safety of Maine’s people is our primary concern. I fully support the work of the Motor Carrier Review Board in this process. They are an independent group, they are representative of Maine’s transportation industry, and I value the work they do to protect everyone on Maine’s roads. These suspensions are completely justified,” Dunlap remarked. He added, “I am hopeful public notice of these suspensions will serve two purposes. First, I am putting all motor carriers on notice- safety violations will not be tolerated in Maine. Second, by notifying fairs and carnivals that do business with these suspended carriers, those organizations will now have sufficient time to make alternate arrangements for securing midway attractions. No one wants a repeat of last year, when several well-established fairs were unfairly impacted by a single motor carrier’s failure to comply with safety laws.”

Dunlap says letters detailing the suspensions, effective July 1, 2007 until August 30, 2007, have been mailed to both Crystal Rock Leasing Company of Pittsfield, Massachusetts and Walker Brothers Circus, Incorporated of Sarasota, Florida.
