Secretary of State’s Office Receives Fifth Recount Request

Augusta- The Secretary of State’s office has received a request for a recount of ballots cast in the race for Oxford County Register of Probate. This request brings the total number of recount requests received thus far to five.

Incumbent Oxford County Register of Probate Tom J. Winsor, a Republican from Norway, requested the recount. Unofficial preliminary results indicate challenger Bruce A. Rood, a Democrat from Waterford, was the winner with 15,130 votes to 14,778 votes for Winsor.

In addition to this recount request, three have been requested in State Senate races, and one other has been requested in a county-level race for the District 1 County Commissioner seat in Oxford County. (For more information on those recount requests, please view the release originally issued Friday, November 7th at http://www.maine.gov/sos/news/2008/recountrequest.htm.)

Candidates have until the end of the day on Wednesday, November 12, to submit an official recount request to the Secretary of State’s office. Recounts will be scheduled to occur as soon as possible following the deadline for recount requests, and may begin as early as this week.
