Recount in Race for Oxford County Register of Probate Concluded

Augusta- The Secretary of State’s office has announced the completion of a recount in the race for the office of Register of Probate in Oxford County. Incumbent Oxford County Register of Probate Tom J. Winsor, a Republican from Norway, requested the recount in his race against challenger Bruce A. Rood, a Democrat from Waterford. Preliminary results indicated Rood had prevailed. The recount results upheld the Election Night result, with 15,157 votes for Rood, and 14,842 votes for Winsor.

Recount totals were the product of a complete recount of ballots cast in 15 of the county’s 39 municipalities, coupled with original Election Night tallies from the remaining 24 municipalities. The recounted ballots represented over two-thirds of the total ballots cast in the contest. The candidates agreed there had not been sufficient gains made by Winsor during the two-thirds recount to indicate any potential for a reversal of the original outcome.

The Secretary of State’s office has one recount remaining, in State Senate District 19. Incumbent Republican State Senator Paula Benoit of Phippsburg has requested the recount in her race against Democratic challenger Seth Goodall of Richmond. Preliminary results indicate Goodall prevailed. This recount is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m., Friday, November 21, and will be held at the Department of Public Safety’s headquarters located at 45 Commerce Drive in Augusta.
