Secretary of State’s Office Receives Two Additional Recount Requests Prior to Wednesday Deadline, Bringing Total Number of Recounts to Seven;

Recounts Scheduled to Begin Thursday, November 13

Augusta- Today the Secretary of State’s Office received requests for recounts of ballots cast in the Election on Tuesday, November 4, in House District 105 and House District 21.

In District 21, Ruth-Marie Spellman, a Democrat from Brewer, has requested a recount in her race against Republican Michael Celli of Brewer. Unofficial preliminary results indicated Celli was the winner, 2,457 votes to 2,388 votes for Spellman.

In District 105, Incumbent State Representative Michael Vaughan, a Republican from Durham, has requested a recount in his race against Democrat David Van Wie of New Gloucester. Unofficial preliminary results indicated Van Wie was the winner, 2797 votes to 2712 votes for Vaughan.

This bring to seven the total number of official recount requests received by the Secretary of State’s office prior to the 5:00 p.m. November 12 deadline for such requests. The other recounts are as follows:

Richard Burns of Berwick, the Democratic candidate in State Senate District 2 has requested a recount in the race against incumbent State Senator Richard Nass, a Republican from Acton. Unofficial preliminary results indicate Nass prevailed, 10,707 votes to 10,322 votes.

Incumbent Republican State Senator Lois Snowe-Mello of Poland has requested a recount in the race for State Senate in District 15 against Democratic challenger Deborah Simpson of Auburn. Unofficial preliminary results indicate Simpson prevailed, 10,019 votes to 9,917 votes.

Incumbent Republican State Senator Paula Benoit of Phippsburg has requested a recount in the race for State Senate in District 19 against Democratic challenger Seth Goodall of Richmond. Unofficial preliminary results indicate Goodall prevailed, 11,158 votes to 11,041 votes.

Charleen Chase, the Democratic candidate in the race for County Commissioner in Oxford County’s first district, has requested a recount in her contest with Steven Merrill, a Republican from Norway. Unofficial preliminary results indicate Merrill prevailed, with 5,376 votes to 5,351 votes.

Incumbent Oxford County Register of Probate Tom J. Winsor, a Republican from Norway, requested a recount in the race for Oxford County Register of Probate. Unofficial preliminary results indicate challenger Bruce A. Rood, a Democrat from Waterford, was the winner with 15,130 votes to 14,778 votes for Winsor.

Scheduling of the seven requested recounts is underway. Thus far, the following recount schedule has been determined:

  • Thursday, November 13, 9 a.m.: State Senate District 2 - Richard Burns (D) and Richard Nass (R)
  • Friday, November 14, 9 a.m.: State Senate District 15 - Lois Snowe-Mello (R) and Deborah Simpson (D)
  • Wednesday, November 19, 9 a.m.: Oxford County Commissioner District One - Charleen Chase (D) and Steven Merrill (R)
  • Thursday, November 20, 9 a.m.: Oxford County Register of Probate - Tom J. Winsor (R) and Bruce A. Rood (D)
  • Friday, November 21, 9 a.m.: State Senate District 19 - Paula Benoit (R) and Seth Goodall (D)

Scheduling of recounts in House District 21 and House District 105 races will be determined in the coming days. Once finalized, a public announcement of the schedule for each of those recounts will be made.

All recounts will be held at the Department of Public Safety’s headquarters located at 45 Commerce Drive in Augusta.
