Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap Announces 8th year for
Vote in Honor of a Veteran Program

“Honor America’s servicemen and women by exercising your right to vote”

Augusta- Election Day 2008 is just 54 days away, and Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap wants to remind Mainers of a unique program highlighting both the value of our democratic system, and the sacrifices made by many Americans to preserve our democracy. “Our right to self-governance has been protected from the beginning by America’s servicemen and women,” Dunlap said, adding, “so it makes sense to remember our veterans when heading to the polls on Election Day. Vote in Honor of a Veteran is a gesture of respect, a simple way of saying ‘thank you’ to those who have given so much to preserve our rights, including the right to vote.”

Vote in Honor of a Veteran provides Mainers with a button personalized with the name of a veteran the voter wants to recognize for his or her sacrifices to ensure our important freedoms. In its’ first year, over 10,000 citizens honored someone who had served, or is serving, in the military. Over the years, Maine voters have paid tribute to grandfathers and grandmothers, fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, husbands and wives, and neighbors, friends, and fellow veterans.

"It’s simple—just tell us the name of the veteran who you wish to honor on Election Day, and we’ll send you your personalized button at no cost,” Dunlap says. “We’re happy to provide this unique way to help people remember the efforts of our brave soldiers—whether they served in years past, or are currently working to protect our nation. Election Day will be here before you know it, so it’s important to order early.” You can order your personalized button on line, or by mail. An online order form can be submitted here: http://www.maine.gov/sos/cec/elec/voter_info/veteran/order.html . Also on the same web page, Vote in Honor of a Veteran order forms can be printed, filled out, and then mailed to the Secretary of State’s office.  All orders will be filled, but only orders received on or before Monday, October 27, 2008 are guaranteed for delivery on or before Election Day, Tuesday, November 4, 2008.
