Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap Announces Availability of
“Support Animal Welfare” Specialty Plate

Proceeds to benefit the Animal Welfare Auxiliary Fund and the
Companion Animal Sterilization Fund

AUGUSTA, MAINE—Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap and Agriculture Commissioner Seth Bradstreet announced today the availability of the new “Support Animal Welfare” specialty registration plate.

“The proceeds from the sale of this plate support two very important Department of Agriculture programs,” noted Commissioner Bradstreet. “The ‘Animal Welfare Auxiliary Fund’ supports animal rescue programs including puppy mill seizures and animal shelters. The ‘Companion Animal Sterilization Fund’ supports domestic animal spay and neuter programs. These are critically under funded,” Bradstreet noted.

“This new specialty plate, which features the colorful silhouettes of a cat, dog, horse and bird, and the slogan “respect, love, adopt” was the result of the work of the Maine Animal Leader Team (MALT), stated Norma Worley, Animal Welfare Program Director for the Department of Agriculture. “MALT is a unique partnership of private businesses, non-profit organizations, and state government. MALT members include Planet Dog, Happy Tails, the Animal Welfare Society, the Animal Refuge League, Maine Humane Society, and the State Animal Welfare Program. MALT members worked hard to collect the 2,000 pre-sales and $50,000 needed to implement a new specialty plate.”

According to Secretary Dunlap, the new specialty plate is available at motor vehicle branch offices as well as town offices that issue registration plates. “The fee is twenty dollars for the first year and fifteen dollars for renewals. Vanity plates are available for an additional fee subject to availability. Vanity plates may not duplicate a vanity plate in another class,” Dunlap noted.
