Secretary of State Charles E. Summers, Jr. To Throw First Pitch at American Legion Baseball Northeast Regional Tournament

OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine – Secretary of State Charlie Summers has been invited to throw the first pitch at Game 11 of the American Legion Baseball Northeast Regional Tournament at 7:00 PM on Saturday, August 6, 2011 at The Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach.

It is not yet known which teams will play in this game, as it will be determined based on the outcome of this evening’s match-ups.  The team representing Maine, Gayton Post of Lewiston, was eliminated from the tournament after losing their second round game to New York’s Whitestown Post

This is the first time in over twenty-five years that Maine has hosted the Northeast Regional Tournament. The winning team will head to the American Legion Baseball World Series Tournament next week in Shelby, North Carolina.

American Legion Baseball has been teaching young people the values of sportsmanship, good health and active citizenship since 1925.  In fact, many of baseball’s greats once played in the league, including Yogi Berra and Ted Williams.  Currently, there are over 5,400 teams registered in all 50 states, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Nearly 100,000 youths, ages 15 to 19, participate each year.
