Program Goals and Responsibilities

Our Three Fold Mission

• Collect, synthesize, and report on solid waste programs and data

• Assist municipalities in their efforts to improve recycling and composting performance
• Ensure sufficient, environmentally secure, disposal capacity for Maine's municipal solid waste

The Maine Legislature has set a goal for Maine to achieve 50% recycling of its municipal solid waste.

A statewide recycling rate of 38.7% was achieved in 2009, over 687,000 tons of recyclables did not end up in a landfill!

This recycling effort was achieved thanks to the combined efforts of Maine residents, municipalities and businesses.

Maine continues to rank highly among other states in overall recycling efforts.
