The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles, within the constitutional office of the Department of the Secretary of State, was established in 1905 out of concern for public safety following the invention, mass production, and use of automobiles. Since that time, the Bureau has served the residents of the State and all users of Maine highways by qualifying and licensing drivers and by maintaining records of driver history, vehicle ownership and vehicle registration. Through the collection of the licensing and registration fees associated with these services, the BMV also provides revenue to build and maintain Maine's highways.

Today, through the leadership of the Secretary of State, the Bureau offers a variety of online services in addition to its familiar branch office locations. Using online services, for example, Maine motorists may renew their driver's license or order a duplicate license, renew their vehicle registration, or check on the availability of personalized license plates. Many other online services are available to businesses, individual motorists and other customers.

The Bureau provides licensing, registation and title services through 13 branch office locations, 24 outreach stations operated by 2 mobile units, the main office in Augusta and municipal agents. Additionally, the Bureau stores and manages data relating to over 1.4 million motor vehicles and 750,000 trailers registered in the State; over 1 million licensed motor vehicle operators, including their driving histories; and much more.

The Deputy Secretary of State directs the daily operations, provides guidance and direction to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles through five operating divisions and one office: Driver License Services; Vehicle Services; Public Services; Administrative Services; Legal Affairs, Adjudications and Hearings and the Office of Investigations.

The Deputy's office is also responsible for department policy and budget preparation and serves as a liaison to the Secretary of State and State Legislature.

This site, like our Bureau, has a lot to offer Maine citizens, businesses and visitors, so please feel free to browse and come back often. If you have questions about the site, or if additional information is needed, please call the Bureau of Motor Vehicles Office in Augusta at (207) 624-9000.
