Secretary of State Charles E. Summers, Jr. to Recognize the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club for 100 Years of Incorporation

AUGUSTA, MAINE -- Secretary of State Charles E. Summers, Jr. will be honoring the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club at the Commissioning Ceremony on Sunday, June 5 for their achievement of reaching 100 years of incorporation.  The Commissioning marks the start of the 2011 season by welcoming new and returning members, as well as recognizing past and current commodores.

“I am truly honored to present the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club with their 100 Year Corporation Certificate,” said Secretary Summers. “As the Governor and the 125th Legislature strive to attract new business to Maine, it is equally important to recognize the organizations that have been making a positive impact on our communities for many years.”

Formed in 1870, the BHYC was officially incorporated on August 2, 1911. The organization has since become a thriving social club during the summer months hosting regattas and offering both sailing and tennis lessons.

The BHYC has experienced continued growth over the years.  This season they have expanded their campus to include space for Junior Sailing Program activities and rooms for training and education sessions.  They have also announced the creation of an Adult Learn to Sail School for members and non-members.

The same year the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club was incorporated several other notable events occurred, including the ground breaking of Fenway Park in Boston, the opening of the New York Public Library, the first celebration of International Women’s day, and the birth of Jean Harlow, Ginger Rogers, Ronald Reagan, Lucille Ball, and Roy Rogers.

The Division on Corporations within the Department of the Secretary of State maintains records for over 80,000 business entities and nonprofit corporations. Twenty-two corporations will celebrate 100 years of incorporation in Maine during 2011.
