Secretary of State Matt Dunlap Announces Results of Democratic Primary Contest Recount in Senate District 33, Part of York County

AUGUSTA, Maine—Today’s recount for the Democratic primary contest between Andrea M. Boland and John L. Tuttle for the nomination to appear on the November general election ballot for the office of State Senator in Senate District 33, which comprises the towns of Cornish, Limerick, Newfield, Parsonsfield, Sanford, Shapleigh and Waterboro in York County, was concluded at the Department of Public Safety headquarters in Augusta. John L. Tuttle was declared the winner after the recount.

At the conclusion of the June 10th primary election, Tuttle led with 841 votes to 821 votes for Boland. In the recount, voter intentions were clarified on a handful of ballots, so that marks that could not be read by the electronic tabulating machines were included in the final tally. After the recount, Tuttle maintained his lead with 844 votes over 822 votes for Boland.

Maine Secretary of State Matt Dunlap noted that both candidates and their volunteers were satisfied with the results. “When an election is close, sometimes a candidate and their supporters just want to be sure of the result,” said Dunlap. “Even with the tremendous advances in technology that make voting and the conduct of elections easier, the advantage of paper ballots is that you can always verify a close election. This recount affirms the hard work of both candidates and the expertise of the local elections officials.”
